Assistant Professor in Media and Cultural Studies, Utrecht University—HERA-project “Transnational Radio Encounters (TRE)”

Keywords: audiovisual memory in postcolonial contexts; digital heritage and transnational memory

Alec Badenoch is Assistant Professor in Media and Cultural Studies. He is also the Beeld en Geluid Endowed Professor of Transnational Media at the VU Amsterdam. His research covers a range of topics in 20th Century national (German) and transnational history, focusing on broadcasting and (trans)national identities and digital heritage and networked constructions of the past. He is PI on the JPI-CH project “Polyvocal Interpretations of Contested Colonial Heritage”, which explores the way colonial narratives shape audiovisual archives and in turn how these shape postcolonial memory, with an eye toward rethinking the way we archive and offer access to those collections. He is also involved in the CLARIAH-PLUS WP5: Media Studies and Audiovisual Data project where he explores the way in which digital ‘re-collection’ of audiovisual heritage makes transnational processes and memories (in)visible and (un)findable.
